Golf Cart Rental FAQs
Everything you might want to know about your Key West golf-cart rental
What do I need to rent a golf cart in Key West?
All golf cart operators must be at least 21 years old and have a valid driver’s license. International driver’s licenses are accepted.
A credit card must be kept on file for the rental, but no security deposit is required. Before pickup, each person who plans to drive the golf cart must complete our electronic rental waiver.
Can you deliver my golf cart to my hotel, vacation rental, airport, or cruise port?
Yes. Delivery and pickup are free and included with your golf cart rental. We deliver throughout Key West, Stock Island, and Key Haven; deliveries are not available beyond Key Haven.
We can deliver to hotels, guest houses, vacation rentals, military bases, and Key West International Airport. Bone Island Rentals is the only local company offering golf cart delivery and pickup at the airport.
Typical delivery times are 30–60 minutes, depending on island traffic and daily demand. We cannot deliver to the cruise port because city rules prohibit it; however, our downtown location is directly across the street—about a five-minute walk from the port.
If you have not completed your electronic waiver in advance, please have your valid driver’s license available when we deliver the cart.
What happens if my golf cart has a problem during the rental?
If you experience a mechanical issue or breakdown, please contact us as soon as possible.
During business hours (8:00 AM–6:00 PM): Call our support line at (305) 849-7417. We will arrange assistance and, if needed, a replacement golf cart so you can get back to enjoying your trip.
After business hours (6:00 PM–8:00 AM): Email info@boneislandrentals.com with the details and location of the issue. Please leave the golf cart in a safe, legal parking location and pay for parking if necessary. Keep your parking receipt—we will reimburse it. If you need an Uber to continue your trip, keep that receipt as well; we will reimburse the Uber expense.
Do not leave the golf cart in a prohibited parking area. Guests are responsible for towing fees and related charges if the cart is towed due to illegal parking.
How do I return my golf cart, and what happens if I need to extend or return it late?
Return options depend on how you received your golf cart. If you picked it up from one of our locations, you can generally return it to that same location, including after hours. If we delivered the cart to your hotel or vacation rental, we can usually arrange pickup there; return instructions and the pickup details must be confirmed with our team at delivery.
Need more time? Please contact us at least one hour before your scheduled return time to request an extension. Extensions are typically easy to arrange during slower periods, but they are subject to availability and are not guaranteed during peak seasons—especially holidays. For the best chance of extending during a busy period, contact us well before your rental is scheduled to end.
Late returns are evaluated based on how long the golf cart was kept beyond the scheduled return time, and additional charges may apply.
Do I need to charge or refuel the golf cart during my rental?
No. All Bone Island Rentals golf carts are gas-powered, and fuel is included with your rental. You do not need to recharge the cart or refuel it before returning it—simply bring it back as-is.
A full tank generally lasts one to two weeks with normal use, and at least a week even with heavier day-to-day driving. For longer rentals, we may arrange a cart swap after one or two weeks to keep the vehicle well maintained; you will receive a clean cart with a full tank. Any cart swap must be arranged with us in advance.
Where can I park my rental golf cart in Key West?
Golf carts do not have dedicated public parking spaces in Key West. Please use regular designated vehicle parking spaces and follow all posted signs, restrictions, and city parking rules.
Metered parking is common throughout Key West, especially downtown. If you park in a metered space, you are responsible for purchasing and maintaining the required parking time. Parking availability and requirements vary by hotel, so please confirm directly with your hotel or vacation rental before arrival.
Guests are responsible for all parking fees, citations, towing charges, and related expenses incurred during the rental. If a ticket is issued and remains unpaid, Bone Island Rentals may charge an administrative fee to process it or submit a transfer of liability to the appropriate agency.
Where can I drive a rental golf cart in Key West?
You can explore nearly all of Key West by golf cart—generally, if a regular vehicle can legally drive on a road, your golf cart can too. You may use your rental throughout Key West, Stock Island, and as far as Key Haven, but you may not travel beyond Key Haven.
Military guests may also drive a golf cart on local military bases if they have a valid military ID and are authorized to enter the base.
Please treat the golf cart like any other vehicle: obey all traffic signs, speed limits, parking regulations, and applicable Florida traffic laws.
What is your cancellation and refund policy for golf cart rentals?
You may cancel your golf cart rental for a full refund when you request cancellation at least 48 hours before the scheduled rental start time. There is no cancellation fee.
We do not issue refunds for no-shows. For cancellations made within 48 hours of the rental start time, we can provide store credit that may be used toward a future rental or another Bone Island Rentals product or service.
Reservations remain active during normal rainy weather. Cancellations or refunds due to weather are available only when an official statewide hurricane warning is in effect. If your plans change, we are happy to modify your reservation, including rental dates, delivery location, and other booking details, subject to availability.
Are there any rules or safety guidelines I should know before driving a golf cart in Key West?
Yes. Golf carts must be operated like regular vehicles, and the same traffic laws apply. Always obey posted signs, traffic signals, speed limits, and parking regulations.
Never drink and drive or use a phone while operating the golf cart. Golf carts are motorized vehicles and may only be driven where regular cars are legally permitted—they may not be driven on sidewalks, bike paths, beaches, or pedestrian-only areas.
Although Key West is generally a safe place to visit, please secure your personal belongings whenever you park. At pickup or delivery, our team will provide instructions for handling the keys and properly securing the golf cart.
Are children allowed to ride in the golf cart, and can we use a car seat?
Children are welcome to ride in our golf carts, but every child must have their own designated seat. Children may not ride on an adult’s lap, sit between passengers, or be “squeezed in” beyond the cart’s rated passenger capacity.
For safety reasons, we generally do not recommend golf-cart use for children under 2 years old. We do not provide infant car seats or rear-facing child seats. If a parent or guardian chooses to bring an infant, they must provide an appropriate child-restraint seat and are solely responsible for making sure it is suitable for the child and properly installed and secured.
We have a limited number of booster seats available for children age 2 and older, but availability is not guaranteed. Parents and guardians are responsible for determining whether a booster seat is appropriate for their child and for complying with all applicable safety requirements. By renting, the parent or guardian assumes responsibility and liability, to the extent permitted by law, for any child riding in the vehicle.
What sizes of golf carts do you offer, and how many passengers can ride in each?
We offer 4-, 6-, and 8-passenger golf carts. The maximum capacity includes the driver: a 4-seater may carry up to 4 people, a 6-seater up to 6 people, and an 8-seater up to 8 people.
Every passenger, including children, must have their own designated seat. Guests may not sit between other passengers, ride on someone’s lap, or ride anywhere outside of a designated seat. Key West enforces golf cart passenger-capacity rules, and exceeding the cart’s intended capacity can result in being stopped and ticketed by law enforcement.
Do I need to make a reservation for a golf cart rental?
Walk-ins and same-day reservations are always welcome, subject to availability. However, we strongly recommend reserving in advance—especially during holidays and Key West’s busy travel season, when availability can be limited.
The easiest way to reserve is online, but you may also call us or visit us in person. Delivery may be available upon request; same-day delivery estimates are typically 30–60 minutes, depending on island traffic and demand. For the most accurate same-day delivery estimate, please call us before booking.
What happens if the golf cart is damaged, involved in an accident, stolen, ticketed, or towed during my rental?
Please report any damage, mechanical issue, theft, towing, impound, or police interaction to Bone Island Rentals immediately. If an accident occurs, contact local law enforcement to create a police report, then notify us as soon as possible. Do not arrange repairs, authorize towing, or leave the cart in an unsafe or illegal location without contacting us first.
Guests are responsible for damage to the rental cart, as well as any citations, towing, impound, storage, or related fees incurred during the rental.
